PASS/FAIL INFORMATION
Each year any Washington student who has parent approval may choose one elective course to be graded on a pass/fail basis.
Only one elective course may be taken pass/fail each year.
Driver Education may be taken pass/fail at any time without it counting toward the one pass/fail per year. Driver Education pass/fail can be processed at any time after grade is recorded.
Debate, Newspaper and Music courses may be taken pass/fail each term under specific circumstances. A Debate/Music student with a GPA of 4.0 or higher has up to one trimester after a grade is recorded to request the pass/fail.
AP classes cannot be taken pass/fail unless exiting the course. Spring AP courses cannot be taken pass/fail.
Pass/fail courses count toward graduation but are not included in computing the grade point average. Courses taken to meet specific subject matter requirements, except for PE, may not be taken pass/fail.
Courses taken to meet the core curriculum requirements of the Honors Program may not be taken pass/fail but they do count in the total credit requisite for Honors.
Yearlong Language Arts courses requirements are not eligible for pass/fail, in 9th and 10th grades. A pass/fail in Language Arts could be used in 11th and 12th but only when an additional replacement course is previously approved by the counselor.
Course expectations are the same as for graded students, and grades will be placed on all course work. An “S” will appear on the grade report if the student passes the course; a “U” will indicate failure. A passing grade (“S”) receives credit. A failing grade (“U”) does not receive credit. Neither impacts GPA.
Students have one trimester after a grade is recorded on the transcript to request a pass/fail from their counselor.
Students who plan in advance to take a course pass/fail must submit the appropriate form with parent, teacher, and counselor signatures so the instructor can record the pass/fail in PowerSchool. Students who request a pass/fail during a trimester that follows the grade need only the parent and counselor signatures.
