Meeting Minutes
November 9, 2004
President Tracy McPartland called the meeting to order at 9:03 am . Thirty-three people were in attendance. Dr. Plagman began with the introduction of nine new teachers at WHS, and a 15-minute Q&A session.
Secretary – The minutes of the October meeting were approved as circulated.
Treasurer – Judy Baird summarized the treasury report for the month. She noted Blue Chip donors total 156 and PTA members 283. Please use the expense reimbursement forms located in the PTA mailbox.
Mr. Dave Coates , Director of Guidance, has asked seniors to give the guidance staff sufficient warning on college application help, so they are not overwhelmed with paper work before the holiday break. Mr. Coates reported on the counselor's 10 th annual college trip. They visited several Colorado colleges this year and spent time with WHS grads. A motion was made, seconded and approved to reimburse the counseling staff $1000 toward their travel expenses.
Dr. Peggy Hardesty , Faculty Liaison and 9 th grade Counselor, reported that 9 th grade scheduling is complete. Dr. Hardesty announced that the WHS orchestra is offering to play at holiday events. Please let her or the orchestra director know if you are interested.
Dr. Ralph Plagman, Principal, noted the leadership retreat was a huge success again with 145 students participating. The Parent Coffee was attended by 12 enthusiastic parents on election night. Although the turnout was low, it was a valuable discussion and should be continued in the future since it is an evening opportunity for parent/staff discussion. Thank you to Sara Clark and Linda Hoyt for their hard work scheduling the parent teacher conferences and thank you also to PTA for the wonderful meals provided. Dr. Plagman applauded efforts by the Health Ed committee, Lynn Dennis and Ann Hoffman, for the ongoing job of arranging speakers here at Wash. The 50 th anniversary Commemoration is moving forward with another meeting next week. The junior Academic Letter Assembly is November12 in the auditorium.
Health Ed – Lynn Dennis shared with the PTA the STD chart and bookmarks with resource phone numbers that have been provided to students. She noted that they will be adding birth control discussion to the 11 th grade sessions. If you have concerns about your child receiving this information, please contact Lynn dennis.lynn@mchsi.com . Parents have the right to sit in on any session. You can check with Lynn or the office for the schedule of upcoming sessions. The visuals being used are no longer on slides, but instead on boards that are passed around the room.
Volunteer Coordinator – Janelle Parks reported that Lori Doyle has some tutors, but is still in need of more. Thank you from Sue McDermott to those who helped with ITEDs.
Grounds – Sue Winegarden reports that all areas of WHS campus that need attention have been adopted by a committee member. That person will keep his/her area tidy and free of weeds. The bench has been installed in the Student Senate garden in the arcade area. We will wait to install the other benches at the foot of Forest Drive when we do the Courtyard project. Our committee donated $400 to the Science Department for the pond they are building. All materials will be purchased at cost and the labor provided by students.
Cookie Sales – The first cookie sale brought in a profit of $303. A sign up was passed for the December 15 th cookie sale.
Reflections – Sorina reported all information has been sent out to the staff regarding the Reflection program. We will see what the response is.
Fundraising – Barb Protsch reported all thank you notes were sent out to donors. There will be an updated insert for programs.
Academic Success – Thank you to Kathy Anderl and Lori Arndt for agreeing to head up this committee.
Founder's Night Nominees – WHS PTA will honor two PTA members on Feb. 8 th , 6:30pm , at Jefferson High School . If you have a suggestion, you may send it to Tracy McPartland tracymcp1@mchsi.com . At next month's meeting we will decide on our nominees.
Tommy – WHS Auditorium, 7:30 pm , November 11-13
December meeting – Bobbie Pearson reminded all to bring 3 dozen cookies/bars/candy to the December meeting. Hospitality will make our annual holiday cookie trays to be given to WHS staff.
