Meeting Minutes

October 12, 2004

 

 

President Tracy McPartland called the meeting to order at 9:55 am following the program presented by Julie Zimmerman of St Luke's Hospital. Thirty-two people were in attendance.

 

Executive Committee Reports

Secretary – The minutes of the September meeting were approved as circulated.

Treasurer – Judy Baird reviewed the treasury notes for the month. A minimal expense amount will be added to the budget for the start-up Reflections committee.

President Tracy asked that the PTA email distribution list be used only by the executive board for PTA business. There will be a legislative forum the evening of October 19. A reminder will be emailed to all PTA members. Tracy attended the kick off meeting for the School Cents program, which we will participate in again this year. At a minimum we will earn $325. To earn additional funds anyone can turn receipts in at Lindale Mall to earn points toward WHS. Be sure to apply your receipts to CR WHS. Receipts from any business inside the mall apply. Also, each dollar spent at the food merchants inside the mall are worth 100 pts. Additional businesses outside the mall that will give 10 pts for each dollar spent are Arbys, Boneheads, Burger King, Firestone, Hy-Vee ( Collins Rd store only), Let's Dance, Pizza Hut, Planet X, Red Lobster, and Village Inn.

 

Staff Comments

Mr. Dave Coates , Director of Guidance…October testing is in full swing with ITED's coming the last two weeks of the month. Students will be tested 45 minutes to and hour each day. College visits to WHS continue. College representatives visiting are listed on the web site daily at http://www.crwash.org . The annual PTA sponsored counselor college visit trip is coming soon. This year they will see six Colorado colleges. WHS counselors have visited over 90 colleges over the years, which are all listed on the counseling web page.

Dr. Peggy Hardesty , Faculty Liaison and 9 th grade Counselor, on behalf of the staff, thanked the PTA for the recent conference dinner. The popular Leadership retreat is full again for this year.

Dr. Ralph Plagman, Principal, noted that the attendance numbers from the fall open house were the highest ever. The warrior band had a banner day recently when they won two competitions in a single day. Dr. Plagman distributed a list of ideas that came from the 50 th Anniversary committee meeting. The 24 in attendance agreed that the focus will be a 50 th Anniversary Commemoration, possibly including a friendly competition between the 50 past classes, a kick-off event, adding an Endowment to provide scholarships, utilizing the “brick” idea to honor contributors, creating an historical video, and the formation of an alumni association. Meetings are open to anyone interested.

 

Committee Reports

Cookie Sales – The first cookie sale is Wednesday, Oct 27. Sara Sauter distributed the shift assignments.

Fundraising – Barb Protsch reported we are over budget on Blue Chip income, however we will continue to include the usual contribution inserts. Hand-written thank you notes will go out soon to donors.

Hospitality – The first teacher dinner of the year was a success. Hospitality provided a Deli sandwich and salad meal with the help of PTA volunteers

Membership WHS PTA membership stands at 304, including 42 new members in the past month.

Volunteer Coordinator – Janelle Parks thanked 50 volunteers for providing the food for the conference meal.

Conference Scheduling – Sara Clark reported that 565 conferences were scheduled, most of which received their first three choices for teachers.

Reflections – This nationally sponsored fine arts competition has not been active at WHS since 1992. Sorina Abernathy requested a small expense budget for participation signs and certificates.

Legislative/By-Laws – Mary Taylor announced two upcoming events – the Legislative Forum on Education and the League of Women Voters Candidate Forum. LaNae will send the details to the PTA distribution list.

Old Business

•  Homecoming Parade – Thank you to Sara Sauter, Laura Mattison, Janelle Parks and Sue Winegarden for putting a home coming parade entry together for PTA.

The meeting adjourned at 11:00 a.m. followed by questions/answers with Dr. Plagman.
